In 89 days I went from running my first 5k to running my first half marathon and then two days later the Double Dipsea (13.7 mi, 4,500 ft elevation gain).
I'm not an expert. In reality, I'm just some guy who started running one day in March 2016.
I had ran a little bit on and off in earlier years of my life but nothing over a mile or two and very slowly. Running just wasn't enjoyable — it felt too daunting and uncomfortable.
Then I moved to the Sunset neighborhood in SF. With the stunning and brutal coastline of Ocean Beach just a 5 minute drive from my house I found myself pulled to the shoreline and running down on the moist sand.
After a while some days of padding along the seashore, I decided to take my running back to the sidewalk and was stunned to find how much my endurance and speed had increased from the beach sessions.
I let go of my trepidation and ran my first 5K without taking any walking breaks. It was a snail's pace time but I was ecstatic.
A few days after running my first 5K distance I ran my first 5K race.
A week after my first 5K race I ran my second and discovered/joined Dolphin South End runners — the oldest and most inclusive (all ages, all skill levels) running club in the Bay area.
Things haven't slowed down at all since then.
